PvP Guide: The Obsidian Ranger
And they said rangers couldn't pvp…

Please note that this guide is intended for mid level (60-160) ranger pvp. At high levels (past 160), the obsidian bow build is no longer very effective because of end game weapons (mordy spears and necro bows).

Intro
This extensive ranger guide tells you exactly what you need to kick ass in pvp. The entire concept of an obsidian ranger revolves around the obsidian bow. This will be your primary weapon, and it will allow you to launch huge skill attacks at the beginning of a fight. After casting your initial skill hits, you will quickly switch to your faster secondary weapon and continue attacking with autos.

Think of it as a first person shooter. You're a soldier with an RPG and a pistol. Your primary weapon, the obsidian bow, is your RPG. After launching the rocket from your RPG, you switch to your secondary weapon (like your pistol), the faster bow, to finish off your target.

Remember that you don't want to auto attack with your obsidian bow because you don't want it to fracture. Using skills only while the bow is equipped will not fracture it. Also, the attack speed on the obsidian bow is horribly slow.

With the right gear, this can be an extremely potent pvp build. I added a table of contents at the top of this guide for easy navigation. I also linked pictures of gear for more info.

Good luck with ranger pvp!

Primary Weapon
All obsidian rangers (obviously) must have this bow (aka your rocket launcher).

Stats, Abilities, and Skills

Stats
Your total health (including boosts from the gear listed later in the guide) should be 20 times your level. So at level 60, you should have 1200 health. At level 160, you should have 3200 health.

Vitality — adjust this to account for health boosts from gear. 1 vitality = 6.25 health.
Strength — all remaining points that you have.
Dexterity — don't put points in, just let your gear boost this.
Focus — no points.

You need high strength to make full use of your obsidian bow's damage. However, you also need a large amount of vitality because 1) you're a pvp ranger and 2) you will be using earthstone, which has weak armor and resistances. Let your gear boost your dexterity—it's not as important of a stat.

Make sure that you rebirth and reduce vitality if you have vitality or health boosting gear (6.25 health = 1 vitality). Dump any extra points into strength.

Abilities
You must max Bow and Ranged Combat abilities. These will increase both your damage and hit chance. Try to max skill evasion abilities as well. Light heal isn't included in your skill set, so First Aid is unimportant.

Skills
Max double shot, sharpen weapons, and steady aim. Put any remaining points into rapid shot.

Strategy

Before the Fight
1. Equip obsidian bow (primary weapon).
2. Cast steady aim and sharpen weapons on yourself.
3. If available, use Sunshard Supremacy first, then Sunshard Fury and finally Reaper's Touch right before the fight starts.

Rotation
1. Double shot.
2. Right after you tap the double shot icon and it starts casting, quickly open up your inventory. Drag your secondary bow above your weapon slot and equip it immediately after the "Double Shot Succeeded" text appears in the chat.
3. Once you have equipped your secondary bow, quickly exit the inventory screen.
4. Cast rapid shot and auto attack with secondary bow for the rest of the fight.
