Thinking about getting an iPad Air2

#1
Looking at picking up a 64G iPad Air 2, undecided on with or without cellular. If I get cellular, I was thinking of ditching the iPhone 4s and going with a cheap, no frills pay as you go.
I'm trying to decide what the best option is:
Buy new through the school $579 Wi-Fi, $709 Cellular
Buy refurbished through Apple $509 Wi-Fi, $609 Cellular
Craigslist $300-$450

New or refurbished through the school allows me to get the Apple protection plan, which I have used once when I left my scroll wheel iPod outside in a three day torrential downpour (completely full of water, replaced free of charge).
But, having gone back to school full time and being on a college student budget, the price from Craigslist looks pretty good. I take care of my stuff and rarely need anything offered by the protection plan. I know there is a way to check if the unit is stolen.

Which option would you go with and why?
Is the cellular any good?
Should I wait to see if prices drop when the iPad Air3 is released (expected in October this year)? I am hoping to start using for note taking and recording lectures, so having it before September would be ideal.
What is the general consensus on how these run?

Gets to be a certain point you have to ask yourself, do I really NEED an iPad air 2 only to have for a few years and it's worth drastically decreasing? I highly suggest iPad mini 2 retina if you plan to do just gaming. It's a bit pointless buying the most expensive just to think back you could have bought way more useful things such as an actual computer or games on steam. Don't ever buy a top device just to play celtic heroes, not worth it.

I can't seem to figure out what you are trying to say.
The one through school would be the Apple educational discount. I could buy one directly from Apple with the discount. buying it from the school is no different.

Be0wulf, I'd be buying this to use for school as well as browsing and possibly as a hotspot if I go with a cellular unit and drop down to a basic phone.

I found out that if you have Verizon, you can get a 64G iPad Air 2 with cellular for under $500 if you activate it on your Verizon account through the store. I think the sale ended this weekend, but there should be one again in a couple of weeks according to the clerk.

Data is expensive on either device you get. However, I do enjoy the cellular on my iPad 2 (which still functions great even though it's many years old) because I can pay to use cellular for one month if I need it then and I'm not bound to a contract. I still use my iPhone 5s primarily for cellular but on occasion I'll pay the $15 for Verizon to get a few gigs for the month on my iPad.

There are also perks of having the cellular version of the iPad even if you don't subscribe as well. You can track your iPad if it's ever stolen if you have Find My iPhone turned on and it's not in airplane mode, even if you're not subscribing to cellular data.

So I guess the best advice I can give is purchase the cellular model WITHOUT a contract and get a free iPhone 5s in a few months when they're made free with contract. ive done too many stupid things when I purchased my devices by not getting large enough storage, purchasing a computer with only 4 gigs of ram... Picking the slower hard drive... Etc. I now realize to fork in the extra money forward so it doesn't bite me in the butt later on... It's always nicer to have more options too :)
