Are staffs (ok, staves), useless? I have a two-handed sword that seems to do a lot more dmg. Wondering if I got my staff skill up, if it would be worth doing over the long run.

i admit i am making assumptions about the game engine

i two gave up on the staff for a while
but it seems that your weaponskill is compaired to that of your opponents in combat when hits, dodges, evades etc are worked out
the hit rate is greatly increased with a staff and staff skill combined with dex compaired to using a weapon untrained

a low damaging hit that doesnt miss will always beat an unreliable heavy hit

also it seems to me that a much higher percentage of my str is added to weapon damage with a staff
presumably on account of the weapon skill

I don't like using a Staff

Staffs are completely useless except as a means of damage until the user gains a totem -- one of the first things I tell fledgling Druids is to ditch their staff and get a totem.
