Can someone explain to me how the weapon damage works in regards to damage and critical, please?

My warrior is 51 and I use a 2 handed sword, I have tried a 2 handed axe and a 2 handed hammer but they take forever to level up, do they not level up in points when I use pummel and strike?

Obviously, the higher the weapon skill the better chance if critical but how do I level them?

Also if I wanted to use a shield and sword will it affect the damage I do from pummel and strike given they don't seem to affect the sword, axe and hammer skill?

Any help in bettering understanding this would be great thanks.

Just doing auto attacks with a weapon type assuming you have the ability unlocked will raise said ability and critical hit ability, skills used will raise your skill (melee combat in your case) and critical skill abilites. Shields wont affect your pummel damage unless your alternative offhand has strength. Strength increases skill damage for all warrior dps skils, weapon damage increases your damage on rupture, giant swing, shatter equal to the amount of damage you get on your skill page

The fastest way to train abilities are to buy a few wisdom elix (500-1k ea usually) and find the weakest fastest sword or axe or spear or mace you can find, use the lix and just auto attack dummies in castle, or use the lix while you try to level up

So it can train up using the dummies?

So it can train up using the dummies?
Absolutely can! Just not critical training dummies, have to be regular training dummies

There's a couple things to consider when calculating damage. This formula may be outdated, but the premise will be similar:

Auto Attack Damage = [0.15818*sqrt(Strength) + 0.061069*sqrt(Weapon Ability) + 0.96523] * Physical Damage + Elemental Damage

So you have to consider these things:
  • Strength - this is on your stats page. You get more strength as you level up and put points in it, or from gear that adds strength to your stats
  • Weapon Ability - This is what we were talking about above. As your weapon ability increases through training, your damage will go up. Each weapon type has a different ability to train, so stick with one as you level and build that up as you go (staff, totem, wand, bow, dagger, sword, axe, blunt, spear, novelty, and hand to hand)
  • Physical Damage - Weapons add in physical damage (slash/pierce/crush). Look at your weapon to see what type it does and how much. Some gear will also add this in, but its rare to see it on anything but a weapon.
  • Elemental Damage - All types of gear add in elemental damage (heat/cold/magic). Take a look at your gear to see what damage it adds in, and add it up. As you can see from the formula above, elemental damage has no modifiers. It just gets added to your base damage.
Now the other thing you need to consider is DPS (damage per second).
  • Take a look at your weapon speed. The speed is listed in milliseconds. So a weapon speed of 5400 hits every 5.4 seconds.
  • This is why attack speed rings are popular. They speed up your attack by 30%, so a 5400 weapon speed goes down to 3780, or 3.78 seconds.
  • This means that you can do more damage over time because you are hitting more often.
  • Haste Elixirs will speed up your attack also.
Edit: Turned this post into a guide: http://www.celticheroes.info/2017/12/autoattack.html
Edit Edit: Also, if you have an offhand weapon, don't use a two handed weapon. Use a single hand weapon and an offhand if available. The reason is that single hand (1h) weapons are faster than two-handed (2h). If you miss an attack with a 2h weapon, it takes a lot longer to hit the target. This is why I always use 1h weapons.

Looked like I am on the hunt for an off hand and preferably an ace or hammer.

Off topic but don’t use a sword... use axe or blunt early on as they are way better than swords sadly. Unless if swords can use rupture, they’ll always be worse. Just a heads up
