Currently I am just 'balanced dps' with the skills. The new fire spells seem cool but ice shards for me is a must have. I use fire bolt, lure of fire, ice shards, lure of ice and cloak of fire. All except cloak of fire is either 30/30 or 30+/30 :) I'm not sure how much skills are really affected by ...

I believe for a Mage it really comes down to either the arcane orb of spirits or masters grimoire. I have had both so far and they have their pros and cons. Mages are no easy class, thats for sure! But I can see mages as a really good end-game class. Totaly powerful, no doubt.
